Prayer Shawl Ministry

Prayer Shawl Ministry

During Coffee Hour each month, our Prayer Shawl Ministry gathers in the Parish Hall to knit and crochet tangible expressions of comfort and care. Whether you join us in person or craft quietly from home, you become part of a circle of compassion that stretches far beyond the stitches themselves.

Supplies, guidance, and fellowship are always provided. Each completed shawl is blessed by Mother Mindy before being offered to someone in need—a gentle reminder that they are held in prayer and wrapped in God’s love.

The Ministry’s Threefold Blessing
The impact of a prayer shawl extends to the maker, the giver, and the receiver, each touched in a different but deeply meaningful way.

  • The Maker — The steady, rhythmic motion of knitting or crocheting naturally invites stillness. Breath slows, the mind settles, and a quiet space for contemplative prayer opens. Many crafters dedicate stitches or rows to a person, a scripture, or a silent blessing. Research—including a 2021 international study in Perspectives in Public Health—shows that crafting improves wellbeing: more than 80% of people experiencing depression report feeling happier after knitting, and the repetitive motion helps reduce stress, lower cortisol, and ease chronic pain.

  • The Giver — Offering a blessed shawl becomes an act of love. When words feel too small—or won’t come at all—the gift itself speaks: You are not alone. You are held. You are loved. It is a way to share God’s comfort when our own hearts feel helpless.

  • The Receiver — To receive a prayer shawl is to be wrapped in prayer. Each shawl carries the warmth of community, the intention of the maker, and the blessing spoken over it. It tells our loved ones that we are praying for their healing, strength, and peace.
